Hossegor – The Centre of Town
It’s mid-June in the south of France which means that we are only really at the very start of the summer season which means that the hottest, sunniest days have yet to grace us with their presence. So, what best to do on some of the more dreary days?
How about a bit of shopping to fight off the grey clouds!?
Just because we’re in a beach town, does not mean that we have to be completely weather-reliant to be able to have a good time.
A quick drive (give or take 7 minutes) from Seignosse and we are in the Hossegor Centre Ville (“Village center” for those who are not aren’t super caught up with the French lingo). This village is quite different from the ones we’ve seen further inland which are laid with cobblestones and filled with quaint patisseries and boulangeries.
Hossegor is more your typical beach town. One of the most renowned surf spots in the world, the town is not short of surf shops, surf schools, and surf brand retailers like Billabong or Quicksilver. The village center has this and more. We wander around the boutiques admiring the delicate clothes and wide variety of bikinis and swimwear. The prices are reasonable and create the perfect opportunity to make a long-term investment in some beachwear.
If you get a bit peckish (which seems to be the constant state of my family), head into one of the restaurants and cafes for some chipirons (this is grilled calamari which is a delicacy of the area) and un verre de vin blanc sec (a glass of dry white wine because… why not?).
Before heading home, pop into one of the nearest patisserie or ice-cream shops for a couple scoops of glace [this is French for ‘ice-cream’. I have two points here: 1) when in France, please do yourself a favor and sample the chocolate ice-cream in literally ANY region. Ninety-nine percent of the time, it will be to die for. 2) don’t confuse glace with verre. The latter means ‘glass’ and remembering this will just save a lot of confusion].
With that digression out the way, let us not forget the markets. During the summer season, weekly markets take place in Hossegor on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, adding to the regular shopping experience. Enjoy a morning out, meandering around the stalls offering chic clothing and hand-made jewelry in search of gifts for friends and families, or a small treasure just for yourself.
